Many people (particularly people in the United States) question the legality of online poker. After all, there are a number of places in the world that do not allow for gambling to occur in person, so why would they allow it online? Some wonder if any laws at all can be applied to activities that occur online in the first place.
Many of those issues are not adequately answered by the laws that we currently have. There are still many “gray areas” when it comes to online no limit poker. The only thing that can really be known for sure is that there are still plenty of people that are going to play it. In the United States, it is generally thought that online poker is illegal, but this is not necessarily true. The action of playing poker online itself is actually not illegal, even if it is for real money. The legality questions come in when the player attempts to wire money that they have won back into their bank accounts. Based on recent laws passed, this kind of activity became illegal. That was an issue at first since players would have a difficult time getting the money that they won out of the system. If they could not get their money, then why would they even bother to play in the first place?
Fortunately for the poker sites and the players alike, they found ways around the new laws that had been written. Many of the sites offer players the option to receive their payout in the form of a check. This means that the site and the players are not breaking any laws, because they are not transferring the money over bank wires. At the same time though, this means that a player would have to wait a longer period of time for their payout. Some sites still offer the option to receive money through a bank wire, because they are not likely to get caught doing so. The amount of times that poker websites have had legitimate run ins with the law are very limited. Players on the sites have virtually never been charged with anything. Most players feel very comfortable playing on the sites, because they do not fear being charged.
